Internet / World Wide Web / WiFi / Bluetooth
The internet is something that is able to connect people around the globe. By definition the internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information. It allows us to have access to anything in an instant. Computer scientists Vinton Cerf as well as Bob Khan are the two scientists that created the internet. They created communication protocols and the system used for the internet. It was created in 1969 for the purpose of transferring data between two computer systems at UCLA. Today it serves a much larger purpose. We use it today to talk to friends and family, watch videos, and have any information we want. We can pretty much do anything we want for entertainment on the internet.
The Oxford dictionary definition of the World Wide Web is an information system on the internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links. Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist invented the World Wide Web. He was working at CERN. It was originally created to meet the demand for automated information sharing for scientists and universities. Now the World Wide Web is used to communicate with people globally and look up information.
The World Wide Web and the internet are related but not the same. The internet is a global network of computers and servers. The WWW is interlinked documents and resources that can be accessed through the internet. The internet is basically infrastructure and the WWW is just a service run through the internet. They work together to provide information. They are two different concepts though.
The first website was created August 6, 1991. It was published by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, the same scientist that created the WWW. He created the site that described the web and how to use it. He also creates HTTP and URL. He also wanted it to be open and free. It is ironic that the first website ever was actually fully dedicated to the web itself. The URL is still up and it is http://info.cern.ch
Hedy Lamarr was an actress and inventor in 1914. She co-invented a frequency hopping technology during World War 2 with George Antheil. It was designed to create secure communication in the military so no one could interfere with their signal. She basically laid out the foundation for modern technology like WiFi and Bluetooth. There is a song by Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck called "This is a song for miss Hedy Lamarr". This song is popular because it highlights how she was more well-known for her looks rather than her smarts. She was a beautiful actress and that's what got her the most attention rather than her ability to lay out the foundation for incredibly advanced technologies.
Bluetooth is wireless technology that allows the sharing of documents or pictures. It works in short wave lengths. The development of bluetooth was formed in 1988. It was named after a Danish king with the nickname "bluetooth" because he had one rotten blue-gray tooth, who was named Harald Gormsson. He is the reason for Denmark's unification. The logo comes from his initials HG in runes with is from the pre-latin alphabet. They are combined together to make the logo.
WiFi is short for wireless fidelity. It is a wireless networking technology that allows computers and phones to communicate instantly with a wireless signal. It uses a high frequency radio signal. There is no one single inventor of WiFi but Vic Hayes was the head of IEEE committee that created 802.11b Direct Sequence in the 1990's.
